ICYMI: Nearly Four Dozen Asian American Community Leaders and Organizations Demand Derek Tran Apologize

Garden Grove, CA – Following Derek Tran’s comments mocking Michelle Steel’s status as a First Generation American, nearly 4 dozen Asian American community leaders and organizations came together to denounce his attacks during AAPI Heritage Month.

Michelle Steel’s family fled Communist North Korea, and Michelle later came to America with her mother and sisters to start a better life. Yet somehow, for Derek Tran, that’s different from exactly what his own parents did, which he touts on his website

Derek is the son of refugees. His parents fled the Communist regime in Vietnam so that their children could realize the American Dream in Southern California. Through hard work and sacrifice, Derek’s family opened a corner market where Derek worked every day after school.

The letter responds: “Mr. Tran, starting a new life and working to attain a better economic state is the American Dream that so many of us or our parents have done. It’s why we are here, and why we love representing the diverse groups in our communities.

You of all people should know and have respect for that.”
